Fear of Floating and Domestic Liability Dollarization

چکیده

Previous attempts to analyze the effect of liability dollarization on “fear of floating” have focused exclusively on the role played by foreign liabilities. Liability dollarization of the domestic banking system, however, poses a similar risk as dollar-denominated deposits and credit impose a source of currency risk on domestic banks and firms respectively. Findings from a large cross-country sample indicate that domestic liability dollarization plays a central role in producing a “fear of floating” among emerging market countries and developing nations. This is an important result because domestic liability dollarization is more reversible than the dollarization of foreign liabilities, providing a reason for optimism that these countries can regain flexibility in the choice of exchange rate regime and overcome their “fear of floating.” JEL Classification: F33, G21.

A Model of Liability Dollarization and Myopic Governments

Liability dollarization of the domestic banking system represents a source of vulnerability for emerging market countries. The root cause is a lack of faith in the domestic currency, which ultimately stems from the belief that the government will not follow policies that promote longrun currency stability. This paper presents a model in which government myopia determines the unofficial dollariz...

Is There a Link between Dollarization and Banking Crises?

I estimate a multivariate probit model to identify key variables that are predictive of banking crises. To add to the literature on this subject, I focus on the role played by unofficial dollarization of domestic banking systems. Unofficial dollarization is a source of vulnerability for emerging markets as large depreciations render both domestic firms and banks unable to pay dollar-denominated...

Introducing liability dollarization and contractionary depreciations to the IS curve

This paper presents a simple modification to the standard IS curve used, at least implicitly, by policymakers that allows capital flight to have a contractionary effect in emerging market economies. In the standard model, capital flight leads to an expansionary shift in the IS curve through an increase in net exports. However, in the presence of liability dollarization for domestic firms, a cur...

Credit Dollarization in Transition Economies: Is it Firms’ or Banks’ “Fault”?

The existing empirical literature on credit dollarization has not reached agreement on its causes. Most studies that analyze financial dollarization start from the presumption that credit dollarization is supply-determined. If this were the case, then policies that attempt to reduce dollarization should aim to affect behavior in the banking sector. We use a newly constructed dataset for twenty-...

Monetary Policy in a Small Open Economy with Endogenous Financial Dollarization∗

This paper analyses optimal monetary policy in a small open economy allowing for financial dollarization (FD). More importantly, we endogenise FD, making it dependent on the expected monetary policy. Contrary to the standard small open economy model, where central banks should control domestic (producer) prices and adopt a pure floating exchange rate regime, we find that some exchange rate cont...
